This is Greece, after all, where tradition is important. So now Metaxa is simply Metaxa, a dark spirit in a category of its own.
If you want to know more about Metaxa then read this page first, about a tour of the Metaxa distillery in Athens. So what is Star Metaxa?
What other star ratings are there? Metaxa is a blend of spirits from different years, in the same way that sherry is a blend, and so the youngest spirit in Star has been aged for at least twelve years.
Some may have been aged even longer, but none less than twelve years. The other two Metaxas in their regular range are 5-Star and 7-Star, so you can figure out that they contain spirits aged for at least five and seven years respectively.
Metaxa is a stylish product. It comes in a solid dark blue box and the bottle inside is equally handsome, with a matching blue top and gold lettering for the label.
With the deep brown spirit inside, it certainly looks classy and very tempting. Perhaps figs as well, another sweetness, and a hint of dark coffee richness.
On the palate the sweetness of rose petals and violets really emerges, balanced by a darker taste of coffee or chocolate. I was lucky enough to get to taste this drink with the Metaxa Master in Athens, and he said you can either drink it on its own, or over ice, as a digestif, use it in cocktails, or in a long drink.
I could imagine this with ginger ale, which is also a good way to enjoy cognac. Out of curiosity I tried it simply with a splash of soda, as I had a bottle of soda open in the fridge, and it worked really well.
So I have a predisposition to like the drink, but I can also now appreciate it more because I can put it into context, with cognacs and brandies and whiskies.
To me it tastes like a very fine brandy, but a little more floral. It really is in a class of its own. Visit the official Metaxa website.
You can buy Star Metaxa at Master of Malt. Travel Distilled was invited on a private tour of the Metaxa Distillery in Athens and you can see a slideshow on YouTube:.
Its taste comes from the combination of Muscat wines from the island of Samos, aged wine distillates, and Mediterranean botanicals. Spyros Metaxa was born in into a family of Greek silk merchants.
His first business was in the trade of fine goods. During his travels, he was exposed to a number of different spirits and wines from all around the world.
According to the company, spirits of the time tended to be harsh on the palate. Spyros Metaxa wanted a smoother drink and created Metaxa in Spyros and his brothers Elias and Alexander built their first distillery in in Piraeus, the port of Athens.
The "Salamina Warrior", the Metaxa emblem, is said to have been inspired by a medallion found in the foundations of the distillery. Metaxa became a commercial success, started being exported to countries across the Mediterranean, and in was exported to the US.
In , the distillery and the Metaxa cellars were relocated to new facilities in Athens' northern suburb of Kifissia where they are today. Although it was first compared to Cognac, and later to brandy, Metaxa is not classified in either of these spirit categories due to the presence of the Muscat wines and the Mediterranean botanicals.
The company's current [ when? He has overseen the production process for more than 25 years. Metaxa is made from Muscat wines from Samos and wine distillates, which are aged separately and then combined in Limousin oak casks.
Mediterranean botanicals are added as part of the finishing process. The island of Samos is in the Eastern Mediterranean. The highest mountain is Mount Ambelos 1,m.
Ampelos means "vine" in Greek. Grapes, primarily Muscat, are cultivated in terraces and hand-picked.
