The lively Jadon Sancho asked questions of Tottenham's defence, but Dortmund could not find the final pass. Thomas Delaney's shot from outside the box was palmed out by Hugo Lloris before Spurs started to threaten as Christian Eriksen fired over and then Roman Burki saved with an outstretched leg from Son.

Dortmund went close to breaking the deadlock late in the first half but Lloris produced a brilliant diving save to claw away a header from Dan-Axel Zagadou on the line.

Son opened the scoring in the 47th minute when he volleyed in from Vertonghen's cross, before Vertonghen fired over after a driving run and then Eriksen shot at Burki.

Juan Foyth, who hasn't played in the Premier League in and wasn't included in Spurs' squad for the Champions League group stages, started in a five-man defence along with Serge Aurier.

Vertonghen finished from Aurier's excellent cross before Llorente headed in from a corner to put Spurs in firm control of the tie.

The defender scored and assisted in the same game for only the second time in his Tottenham career. He pushed forward more in the second half which allowed Spurs to sustain attacks and also meant Sancho was not as effective.

Spurs welcome the Bundesliga side to Wembley for their first group stage match of this seasons Champions League campaign.

Mauricio Pochettino is without the suspended Dele Alli for the mid-week game, but his side should be confident after a big away win against Everton on Saturday.

The North London club will be keen to pick up a win at their temporary home ground Wembley, something they have not done there in the two fixtures against Chelsea and Burnley this season.

Sky Sports pundit Nicholas has tipped Spurs to draw against the German opposition on Wednesday, but does expect striker Harry Kane to find some great joy against the Dortmund back-line.

Soon-to-be Chelsea midfielder Christian Pulisic headed over in space with 15 minutes remaining, and Lloris earned a deserved clean sheet with a fine low save from Paco Alcacer's drive.

Lloris has been under the microscope again of late after the mix-up which led to Chelsea's second in their defeat last Wednesday, but his contribution ensured Spurs crucially went into half-time level.

He made seven saves in total, five of which were more than your routine stop, on a night where Mauricio Pochettino's masterplan still depended on a fine goalkeeping performance.
